Stimuli # 4 Moffat, T 1994, Scarred For Life

■ When engaging with the stimulus take notice of where the focus lies in each photograph; an object, a place, a body a space. Look at the relationship between the body and its space in each image.

■ The imagery presented appears nonchalant, almost unassuming, however once you pair Moffat's words with the photograph the connotations behind each image are empowered.

■ How have the images been captured?

■ Is there an emphasis on foreground, background or both?

■ Do these images feel relevant today? Are these the sorts of images presented in contemporary social media?

■ How does the below photograph comment on gender?

Images are photographs taken by the artist. The artist's photo helps viewers understand and focus by maximizing the character and situation of the person in the photo, their facial expressions, and the objects they have. The artist's photos emphasize the overall flow and people rather than the background in the picture. The message that the artist conveys through the artist's work still has a problem to be mentioned. Social issues such as gender identity, racial discrimination and the problem of the wrong family environment continue to be addressed in modern media to this day. In the photo below, it can see a child raising his hands in front of his father, who shows the patriarchal atmosphere. It can see the sense of distance between parents and children in the photo, and it can feel the tension in the space between the distance between two people who are not close. In the story in the picture, the boy's father is scolding the child for expressing the female identity of a fairy tale. This shows the story of false gender identity discrimination, not the education of distinction and difference. This is not just a matter of family education and gender identity, but it can be considered a patriarchal social problem and the decreasing amount of social women's activity.

TEAM 04 | David Lynch

Stimuli # 3 Quinoa 2006, motion picture, Absurda, Los Angeles
■ When engaging with this stimulus, please notice how Lynch’s performance is complemented by lighting and sound. You may not find much meaning or purpose in the words spoken by Lynch, so be sure to give attention to how he chooses to verbally deliver those words. Pay close attention to the variations of sound in this presentation. Notice the drama in the black and white delivery and use of the hand held style of filming. The format is raw; Lynch is simply cooking a simple dinner, however the power of film, sound, colour and bodies afford the short greater depth.

■ What is the mood you conclude of the film?

■ Is it ominous? Were there any quotes / lines that stood out to you?

■ What do you make of Lynch's attire in the below still?

■ What conclusions does this short film draw about social, gender or cultural themes?
In Lynch's video work, I can enjoy visually more contrasting contrast in a black-and-white screen of about 20 minutes, his voice, and background music that contrasts a little tension. In his video, he tells about the impressive things that took place in Yugoslavia on his way back to Paris while cooking his favourite Quinoa and even Venice. His story is not surprising, but the atmosphere created by the black-and-white screen and lighting, and the background music that enhances his words make his words and actions appear more intense. His attire shows the feeling of a light suit, which works as an excellent link to the black and white screen. When substituting from a social and critical point of view in his video, it becomes a problem if ordinary words and actions are also a problem, and those who want a stimulating issue trust and follow the expected outcome predicted in the process rather than the outcome when a problem occurs. These results can show socially erroneous agitation, and people can think of stereotypes and the resulting innocent victims. Although the meaning Lynch is trying to convey is not a social and critical point of view, in his intention, the audience can think in many ways. This is also why I like it the most.
