The LRCB
With a team consisting of clinical physicists, researchers, medical specialists such as radiologists and pathologists, and teaching radiographers, the National Expert and Training Centre for Breast Cancer Screening (Landelijk Referentiecentrum voor Bevolkingsonderzoek, LRCB) contributes to the optimisation
and quality control of breast cancer screening in the Netherlands.

Since it was first established in 1988, the LRCB has been continuously engaged in quality control
activities for medical imaging systems, has regularly carried out audits at screening organisations, and
has participated in scientific research into various aspects of screening and breast cancer. In addition,
the LRCB is involved in teaching. It trains radiologists who carry out screening activities and also provides refresher courses. Radiographers involved in screening activities are trained, completely or in part, by the LRCB and are also examined by the LRCB.

The Centre for Screening at the National Institute for Public Health and Environmental Protection (RIVM) uses the services of the LRCB for the quality assurance and optimisation of breast cancer screening in the Netherlands. The LRCB also provides mammographic consulting and training services when requested and carries out audits at screening organisations and clinics inside and outside the Netherlands. The LRCB continuously monitors and implements the latest developments and guarantees state-of-the-art breast cancer screening in Netherlands.

Manual on mammography positioning technique
Good positioning technique is essential for providing a mammogram that can be correctly evaluated by the radiologist. Unfortunately, one cannot prevent breast cancer, but the LRCB can ensure that tumours are not missed due to poor positioning technique! Correct positioning when performing mammograms is therefore of vital importance. And in the end, the aim of mall professionals involved in mammography is to reduce mortality rates from breast cancer.

This manual was written primarily for radiographers either in training or already employed in the area of diagnostic or screening mammography. However, it could also be of interest and useful for others involved in mammography.
