In late 2009 my team's proposal was chosen by Webster University for its undergraduate recruiting campaign.
The idea behind “A Better U” was to offer a simple phrase that spoke to the aspirtions of prospective students, while also allowing the university to promote its general excellence. The campaign was utiilzed for all materials over the next two years, including publications, television and radio advertising, outdoor signage and promotional material at the university’s many public events. As lead graphic designer on this project I was responsible for making the design fit into a variety of materials. We extended the look and idea across a large swath of material which helped to homogenize our recruitment materials. This had the benefit of allowing prospective students to have a consistent and inviting path to the University. The recruitment materials used consistent “characters” who were real Webster students and were actually there when the students showed up on campus for to conduct tours.
The campaign was very successful, leading to the third largest incoming undergraduate class the school had in its history. It was featured as the theme of the president’s convocation speech and adopted by several of the university’s overseas campuses.
