Adam Schwarze's profile

The First Phase of Navy SEAL BUD/S Training

A Navy SEAL lieutenant based in Honolulu, Hawaii, Adam Schwarze holds a bachelor of science in political science from the University of Minnesota. To prepare for his career as a Navy SEAL, Adam Schwarze underwent Basic Underwater Demolition (BUD/S) Training.

Notoriously rigorous, BUD/S training is separated into three phases: basic conditioning, diving, and land warfare. The first phase begins with five weeks of physical conditioning designed to improve stamina and focus. With an emphasis on running, swimming, and calisthenics, the training involves weekly 4-mile runs in combat boots and timed obstacle courses, as well as small boat seamanship. Students must also swim distances of up to 2 miles in varying ocean conditions.

The sixth week, known as Hell Week, requires trainees to complete five continuous days of training with a maximum of four hours of sleep. Designed to test physical and mental endurance, the week instills a sense of perseverance and teamwork. After Hell Week, students conclude the first phase of training with three weeks focused on learning to conduct hydrographic surveys and create hydrographic charts.
