Types of materials for steering wheel braids

Today in the markets of Russia there is a huge number of braids on the steering wheel of the most diverse design and quality. There are even handmade braids, so to speak, design options that do not fall under the general classification. One of the main points in the question of how to choose a braid for the steering wheel is the selection of the appropriate material from which the braid is made. Let's consider the most common materials:

1. Leather. It is considered the most expensive and durable material. Indeed, the leather braid will serve for a relatively long time without losing its qualities. However, there are also disadvantages to this material: the skin becomes rather cold in winter. Therefore, without preliminary warming up the interior or using gloves, it is unlikely that it will be possible to drive comfortably.

2. Leatherette, leatherette or other inexpensive material. Much here depends on the quality of the braiding, the reliability of the stitching and gluing, as well as additional reinforcing and decorative inserts. Often, leatherette braids serve no more than two years of active car operation. After this period, their appearance and structure are irretrievably lost.
3. Cloth or plush. This material plays a decorative rather than practical role. The main advantage is a comfortable ride in cold weather. Fabric-based materials keep your hands warm in winter. The main disadvantage is rapid pollution and loss of attractive appearance. Not suitable for aggressive or sporty driving.

4. Rubber material with foam or leather inserts. An interesting layout that many drivers love. Differs in pliability of foam rubber, which takes the shape of hands, and elasticity. This is noted by many drivers as a very convenient feature.

How to choose a braid on the steering wheel: basic models

There are two fundamentally different types of braids: sheath or lace braid.

A cover is the simplest and most common option. It is sold immediately in the form of a steering wheel with a cardboard insert that supports the geometry. This is very convenient if the size of the steering wheel is unknown: you can simply attach the braid in the packaging to the steering wheel and see if it fits or not. This model is put on the steering wheel by applying light effort in a few seconds; this is considered a major benefit.

Important: the braid in the form of a cover must be selected strictly according to the dimensions of the steering wheel. If the size of the braid is larger than necessary, then it may slip during rotation, which is dangerous. Smaller diameter braids can be damaged if slipped over the handlebars. And in some cases, wearing it is not possible at all.
The lace-up braid options come in two sub-types. One is sewn up with a needle and thread, the second is attached to the handlebars with a cord. The main disadvantage is the rather lengthy process of installing the braid on the steering wheel. It also takes some skill and dexterity to lace up the braid correctly and without damage. But the main advantage is a more aesthetic appearance and ease of use.
