Polonnaruwa, (Date redacted)
// Transmission start //
The first thing we noticed were the red lights. It took us a while to register what was actually happening. Then the tremors started almost immediately as the numbness of realisation ran down our spines - Seals 5, 6 and 7 had been breached. Containment was no longer an option.

When we ran outside the Klaxon had already started - the loud wailing signalled the end. As we ran to the closest Evac, those of us who managed to look back only saw giant plumes of dust. These were no doubt from the pressure differential in the main hatch opening. The inner wall was lost. A quick moment of humour flared up in me as I faced the truth; no wall would keep us safe now.

In all our quiet decades of being at this base, we never expected this to happen - How could we? The Enigma had never shown any sign of being awake; so much so that even among the staff, it had passed in to myth. The irony was clear; this carefully guarded secret, kept secure for millennia since the pre-history of this place, had finally failed at the height of human technology. If ever one day we find the strength to laugh again, it will be at our own hubris.

As a man of science, I can only implore one thing. Pray. Pray to whatever old gods your ancestors believed in. Pray for luck and a swift end. Pray that you don’t lose your mind before the latter. If you do not believe - you will soon enough.
