A noncontagious skin disorder, seborrheic dermatitis is characterized by itchy red areas on the skin, oily scales, and white or yellow crusty or powdery flakes. Seborrheic dermatitis can affect nearly every part of the body.

Seborrheic dermatitis affects roughly 11 percent of the population. It is most common in babies under three months old and adults between the ages of 30 and 60. People with oily skin are more prone to get this kind of dermatitis. It has a slight male prevalence, and Caucasians are more affected than African Americans. Susceptibility to seborrheic dermatitis can also be increased by a weakened immune system and the use of some psychiatric drugs.
