Allergic Contact Dermatitis - Diagnosis

A board-certified dermatologist and Mohs micrographic surgeon, Dr. Thi Thien Nguyen Tran serves as the medical director of his dermatology practice, Village Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery, headquartered in The Villages ®, FL. Dr. Thi Thien Nguyen Tran and his team treat various skin disorders such as allergic contact dermatitis.

Dermatitis refers to inflammation of the skin. Allergic contact dermatitis happens when the skin comes into contact with specific allergens and develops a painful or itchy rash in response to the contact. The immune system reacts every time your skin comes into touch with an allergen by drawing white blood cells to the area of contact, which triggers inflammatory chemical mediators. Jewelry metals (such as nickel), cosmetics, perfumes, and preservatives are all common allergies.

During diagnosis, doctors discuss patients about their symptoms, ask patients questions to determine their allergen, and evaluate the affected skin area to note the pattern and severity of the rash. When allergens are uncertain, doctors prescribe a patch test to check whether the patient is sensitive to any probable allergens.

During a patch test, small quantities of possible allergens are fixed in adhesive patches then placed on the patient's skin. The patches will stay two to three days on the patient's skin. Patients need to keep the test areas dry throughout the time. After two or three days, the doctor will examine the patches for any skin responses and determine if further tests are required.
