Navy SEAL Teams Consolidate, Pivot Toward Great-Power

With a background in the U.S. Navy SEALs extending nearly a decade, Adam Schwarze has military experience that began as a member of the Marines. A proven leader who has brought innovation to his unit, Adam Schwarze follows developments in the SEALs and in the broader Armed Forces.

As reported in Business Insider, a significant restructuring of Navy SEAL Teams was announced in August 2021. This aims to consolidate a pair of SEAL units into one integrated unit. Signaling a pivot toward “great-power competition” involving Russia and China, the new Naval Special Warfare Group (NSWG) 8 combines the low-visibility and intelligence-gathering capacities of deactivated NSWGs 10 and 3.

A focus of the new NSWG 8 is on maritime special-operations, and it has the SEAL Delivery Vehicle Team (SDV) capabilities of the NSWG 3. Using mini-submarines, SDV Teams can efficiently insert and extract special-operations troops and perform special reconnaissance operations. SWG 8 also has the organic intelligence-gathering capabilities of the former NSWG 10. Among its capacities beyond surveillance are electronic warfare and cyber-warfare, which can provide SEAL platoons with actionable, on-the-move intelligence.

As the commander of the Naval Special Warfare Command described it, NSW realignment serves to integrate distinct capabilities and form “new irregular options” that can tackle persistent U.S. national security challenges and bolster “all domain deterrence.”
