Redesign Book Cover "What If?"

Redesign Book Cover "What If?"
My assignment for Illustration class was to redesign a book cover. We had to choose from three books of which we'll redesign the cover of and I chose the book "What If?" by Randall Monroe. In this post I'll show you my proces from start to finish of how I made my redesign!
I made some doodles and sketches of my thought proces for what I could use for the front cover of the book. I took some inspirations from inside the book as my design for the cover. I thought that using the volcano idea looked more exciting since I could add some more details to it such as the bomb and the plane. The glass of water and the title with the stick figure looked a bit boring, hence I didn't use them in my concept. However, I did end up using this idea with the figure relaxing against the tree, which became my back cover.

These two eventually became the final sketches/ideas I used for the cover as you can see in the complete concept down below.
I asked a classmate of mine to do a draw-over of my idea for the book cover and this is his interpretation!
I forgot to make the spine of the book so I this idea came somewhat out of nowhere. I still like it, regardless! After making the concept I went on with making the final product of this design. The proces of it took quite a long time. The only mistake I made was making this design in one document instead of making each part separately. This later on became a bit of an obstacle for me when it came down to making the mockup.

As you can see, I used my concept as a base for my line art for the final product. During the proces, I made a few small adjustments like fixing the text balloon, changing the size and placement of the titel in the smoke, and of course the additional dinosaur for comedy's sake.
And here's the mockup! Unfortunately, I had to use an alternative drawing program to make the mockup, so it doesn't look as clean as I had hoped for. But I'm overall proud of how it looks like, especially since it was my first time working on a project like this one.

Looking back to it now, I can see a few small mistakes I've made when making this redesign. If there was something I could change, then it would've been the way I made the entire book cover. I should've made each part separately instead of putting everything in one document. At least I know this for the next time when I do this!

Thanks for reading!
