"You Must Be Love" (Oil on Canvas)  22x28"  SOLD
Music has been such a major part of my life, I decided to name some of my work after songs that mattered to me. This one is inspired by an 'Old Skool Jam' by Smokey Robinson & The Miracles. The old days, when peple actually touched when they danced. Blue light parties in the basement, and a song could take you to ecstasy.
"Gods & Goddesses" Pastel on paper 18x24"
Juxtaposing "traditional" dieties (as in Western Euro Gods & Godesses) with African gods, symbols & imagery.
In this first image, a classical image of Moses(as created by Michaelangelo) looks on as a contemplative African godess or priestess gazes silently.
"Gods & Godesses II" Pastel on paper (with gouache). 18x24"
Again, I'm mixing traditional African imagery (tribal sculptures, fertility dieties, etc.)with Westen/Euro religious iconinc images. In this work, a Christ figure (note halo) gazes on a figure hanging upside down.
"Gods & Godesses III"
3rd in the group. In this one an Athenian mask/helmet (representing ancient Greek mythology/ religion) is mixed with
tribal African images, flora & fauna.
18x24" Pastel on paper, with gouache.
"Afternoon Marketplace" Acrylic on Canvas. 24x36"      Another from the African trip

"Nude Female" Pencil on paper; 2013
"Nude Female: Abstracted" Pencil on paper; 2013
One of my more recent drawings, and one of my current favorites. I love abstracting from life, and will probably turn this into a painting some day.
"On Going To Weddings Alone" (Acrylic on paper) 78x34"tryptic.  Allegory , symbolism after a friends wedding.
Abstract (Acrylic on paper)
Oil on paper
"Where There's Gold" Mixed Media. Another of my song pictures. This one was inspired by a song by Seal.
Abstract ( Oil on paper) 10x14"
"Police Yourself" (Oil on canvas) 30x40"    3rd in a series of 'word-paintings' . I'll post the others another time.
Installation /Assemblage (Mixed Media)    Banners - Assemblage using paint, natural elements such as cowrie shells, rafia, feathers, twigs, human hair, jewels, bone, etc. I incorporated Adinkra symbols (African symbols representing different principles), Historical Cultural elements (poultices, hair, skulls), and paint to evoke tribal heritage and history.
"All World Power" / Installation (study)
Using various materials (bone, human hair, paint, string), I want to invoke spiritual /natural forces from ancestors at the same time  call attention to today's multi-culti world. The 4 colors represent the "colors" of all the peoples of the world (Black, White, Red, Yellow), while the pouches/poultices- once used to ward off enemies or evil spirits, can carry hopes, dreams & wishes for the future.
"Bene-Owu" /Installation study
"Life, Death & Re-Birth" /Installation study
"Heaven & Earth"  /Installation study

"Artist's Model" (Oil on Paper) 22x30"
"Seated Male" (Oil on Paper) 22x30"
"Seated Figure, Female " (Oil on paper) 22x30"
"Male Torso w/Mask" (Acrylic on Paper)
"Homeboys" (Oil on Panel)  WORK-IN-PROGRESS
One of my latest pieces. I'm on a quest to document/chronicle my people. In our natural environments, in my own creative way. (Not unlike artists through millennia).
"Homeboys" 2013. Still a work in progress. Getting closer to a finished work.
"Portrait -Turban" Watercolor w/pencil
"Wearing A suit & Playing in Madonna's Band"  (Journal series) Gouache
"Study in Blue & White" Pencil, crayon & watercolor
"Myths & Magic Things"  Though this began as a fashion piece, I'm including it here because it expressed some of my innermost feelings. I was new to Milan, trying to find work, and came across a lot of discrimination & prejudice. At the time I had a band, and the words are from a song that I wrote (never recorded) ...
"Tito" , Oil on Camvas panel

"Lamentations" 2013 Oil on panel. (work in progress). This painting was inspired by the Trayvin Martin muder. I wanted the female to represent the thoughts, feelings and some of the emotions associated with this tragedy. I planned to include  sketches of males in the background writhing & dying. The dilemma comes in how to portray this? I sketched a few live moel figures, but wasn't happy with the attempt. I may just scrap the original idea & just create a portrait in oil... we'll see.
"Afternoon Roadside"; Acrylic on Canvas; 1990 : SOLD

"Ibrahim" Acrylic on Canvas

The 4 paintings above are all from my "Senegal Series". Inspired by my first trip to Africa. These wrere my first group of paintings that I showed in a gallery. I'm not 100% loving them now (our eyes grow as we grow).
Acrylic on Canvas; circa 1990
"Self-portrait @ 24" Acrylic on Cardboard
"Fauvist Self-Portrait" Oil on canvas panel; 14x18" 2012
"Fauvist Self-portrait"; Oil on Canvas panel (study)
This is a collaboration between James Campbell & Myself. Campbell is an artist in the life drawing group I attend. I've always loved his work: wild, free & painterly (somewhat opposite mine). I thought the difference in styles might make for an interesting collabo. Someone mentioned a similarity to Kandinsky...not sure how I feel yet.
texting... mixed media collage. 2013
"Elder - Chrysanthemum"; Oil on panel. Part of my 'Man & Nature' Series. This is the first stage.
"Elder - Chrysanthemum" Stage 2, still a work in progress (May 2014)
Female Nude - abstracted; Pencil & marker on paper; 2013
