2D Art Assignment: Realism
For this period in 2D class, we were assigned to draw realism as we implemented the theory we learned in our artwork. This project will show you how I worked from start to finish.
The first step was to learn basic color theory. We were tasked to make a simple artwork or use your old artwork and change the color palette by using three or more of the values. For example monochrome, triadic, analogous, complimentary, etc. I decided to go with monochrome, triadic, and analogous.
Next thing on the list was to learn a painting technique. For exercise, we watched a pre-recorded video of one of our teacher who taught us how to paint digitally by using a monochrome color palette.
We were given a template from our teacher that we could use in order to make the exercise. The light points were also already pointed out for us.
Afterwards, we were assigned to find and choose a work from the artist Roberto Ferri. The assignment was to basically deconstruct the artwork, meaning you try to  try to recreate the piece you chose by distinguishing the basic shapes in the original artwork from the very complicated shapes.
Left is my reference material and right is my rough sketch
I did my best to first trace some rough, basic shapes on the original artwork, including the action line. The action line, to me, is the most important part of when you're drawing a pose because it's the quarter stone of drawing a pose. You depend your pose mostly on the action line, because without it it'll look stiff and uneven. Your pose will look confused if you don't use a good action pose.

I build up the shapes from there and made a rough sketch (as you can see on the right).
Then I continued to make a clean up of the rough sketch so I have a better view of what shapes I'm working with when I start painting it.
The next step was to paint the shapes by using greyscaling. I was unaware that my artwork would turn out a bit too purple in the end so I ended up picking the wrong hue for my greyscaling. The finished product down below will elaborate on that issue and will also explain why color hues are important.
As I said before, my artwork turned out to be a little more purple than I thought it would. The skin looks a little too pink-ish/purple-ish. I went over with the colors on a new overlay layer and I was too late when I realized that my artwork would turn out like this. Would I have checked it sooner, I probably could've avoided making this mistake.
*Artist's note:
Realism was never my strongest suit nor was it my cup of tea. However I do like to use the painting method and I will try to keep using this method in my future artworks. My process and "Final product" look a little unfinished because I've been sick for a long period of time which became an obstacle in my schedule. Nonetheless, I still tried my best to "finish" this as much as I could.
