A Michelin star is a prestigious mark of recognition given to the best dining establishments and eateries across the globe. It started in 1926, and chefs worldwide seek Michelin stars because of the prestige they bring to their restaurants. There are three Michelin stars in the rating system. One star is the first in the hierarchy. It means that a restaurant is a fine dining establishment; two stars mean a restaurant has excellent cooking and is worth a detour, while three stars indicate a restaurant has exceptional cooking and is worth taking a special trip for.

The first time judges gave Michelin star ratings to restaurants was in 1926. Today, Michelin has endowed 2,817 restaurants across the globe with stars. Currently, only 113 restaurants in the world possess all three stars, while 414 have two stars and 2,290 possess only one star. France has the highest number of Michelin star restaurants, with 638 in 2021. However, some notable three-star Michelin restaurants are based outside France, such as the Azurmendi in Spain, Per Se in New York, Robuchon Au Dome in Macau, and The Fat Duck in the UK outside France.
