HOTH REBELS - A TOY STORY

Let me just say that I have no particular fidelity to Star Wars so I don’t care if I mix and match different characters from different films or shows or timelines. (Although, I much prefer the original trilogy to the newer films shoving their tokenistic, woke identity politics down my throat - and I say this as a brown man). I just used what I had to tell a story. And in this case the basic premise was a couple of Hoth Rebel fighters alone in the snow hunted and attacked by a TIE fighter and its stormtrooper pilot. Simples.

These were small but surprisingly life-like figures, with removable googles and face-coverings, although the slightly limited articulation meant I still had to choose my poses and angles carefully. For this project I tried to imagine how it would look if Michael Bay directed a Star Wars film, i.e., lots of low Dutch angles looking up at the characters, slow motion explosions and characters flying through the air. Silly but visceral.

The snow was played by some soft white foam, typically used to wrap stuff, and blizzards and laser blasts were added in post. The characters were suspended with fishing line, which was also and easily removed in post. The great thing about the snow setting was not having to worry too much about background details, since everything was mostly just white or washed out, or covered by blizzard. This also made this project incredibly cheap, as even the figures themselves cost coffee money.
