Lexia Reading Core5

Lexia Learning, Inc. (now a Rosetta Stone Company) was in the process of developing their next generation foundational reading software product for browser and iPad, Lexia Reading Core5, and were missing the creative piece of the puzzle. They were subsequently stalled. I negotiated to have myself and my creative partner brought on board to spearhead the creative efforts and get the project moving again.

We worked in close collaboration with the Development and Content teams to take the raw building materials they supplied (base pedagogy and rapid prototype coded archetypes) to concept, design, and implement, from the ground up their next generation program. Our vast experience and knowledgebase from 14+ years of putting together large ESL/ELL textbook programs was invaluable towards informing how functionality and "game-play" integrated to create a seamless and natural UX.

The Results:
• Lexia Reading Core5 Launched for browser and iPad July 2013
• To date, over 1 million students use the program and usage continues to explosively grow
• The program has increased Lexia Learning's market penetration from 3% to nearly 20% and sales of the program continues to explode
• Lexia Reading Core5 has received, and continues to receive, resoundingly positive feedback from adopters of the program from both teachers and students.

My Role:
• Working in close collaboration with the Art Director, I lead and guided all efforts to concept and present program UX/UI, develop visual layer/dialog, specify audio, concept and storyboard animations, design functionalities, and generally lead development of all creative aspects of the project’s student facing layer
• Determine scope of the project, identify and source needed resources
• Present concepts and justifications to key stakeholders and top-tier management.
• Prepare and present RFP's to vendors and handle all negotiaions and contracts with vendors
• Plan and track Creative budget for project
• Develop and implement workflow included determining and creating project documentation
• Manage deadlines and deliverables
• Troubleshoot and work through a variety of technical roadblocks
• Motivate and mentor team members across department lines

Screenshots
There are a total of 18 levels in the program, 89 activities, 800+units, and over 4,000 various visual and audio assets. Below are just a few screenshots from the program.
Panimations
Each level has, what we dubbed, a Panimation. These were parallax animations of a panoramic scene meant to set the stage and acts as a visual expository for the user. The animations traveled through the viewport from Left to right, up to down, or down to up. Below are selected full illustrations of the panimation along with how they appeared in the program.
