Memoria del segno | Sign Memory
How a sign become a symbol
Memoria del segno is the my degree project. The realisation took several months and I used different types of media. The idea came during a walk I took in the month of March in 2019 in a small town in Liguria, Rapallo. A few months earlier a strong mareggiata had destroyed the seaport and all the boats were damaged, as well as the promenade, the trees and also many shops.
The book was printed on a 100% recycled paper 125g. Cover is printed with UV embossed customisation on a soft touch cardboard.
This thesis book aims to commemorate an event that marked the lives of the inhabitants of the Tigullio, in Liguria. The aim of this backward-looking work is to give value and emotional weight to people's stories. The thesis book is divided into three major chapters: Archive, Origin and Project. A work that can help the stratification of memory by going beyond the spectacle of destruction. The project takes the form of an exhibition that allows the visitor to empathise with the feelings experienced by the local people.
There were still boats on the waterfront, one in particular caught my attention. It was totally broken and on the side the sea had “painted” a sign that reminded of the Mareggiata. I started collecting information from people who had gone through the devastating experience. I filmed their stories and also their reaction to the sign on the boat I had photographed.
The idea came to life in a book (in addition to the video documentary). The book is divided into three parts: a research archive of the artists who inspired me and worked with the 'sign'; a part that tells the origin of the idea; and the last part which fully describes the project and the exhibition that could not take place.
