En ésta región, el son jarocho es la principal manifestación de la fiesta veracruzana cuyo orígen se dice, es una mezcla de aires españoles influenciados por ritmos africanos ya que quienes lo practicaban eran mulatos, marineros y las personas de los pueblos que convivian con ellos. Es un género musical que originalmente se ejecutaba con jarana y requinto (y también presumiblemente con flauta) y que con el tiempo, se les unieron el violín y el arpa. Como manifestación musical popular, está intimamente asociado al modo de vida regional, lo cual imprime variantes muy significativas. En algunas comunidades el son y el fandango (su baile) fungen todavía como fuertes elementos de cohesión social.
