On Monochrome
Digging Art out of the Clutter of Color
People see naturally in color. It's what we all expect? So why work in black and white? Quite simply, removing hue and saturation from the image reduces the image instantly to an abstraction. An unsuccessful color photograph is easily passed off as a snapshot. An unsuccessful black and white print stands out clearly as failed art. A well-executed monochrome image draws the viewer into the two-dimensional world, forcing the imagination to wonder what it was like to be there -- at that moment.
