In my role as the Consulting UI/UX Designer at the California Community Colleges Technology Center, I was tasked with a comprehensive overhaul of their legacy design, aimed at enhancing the overall product and user experience. My journey in this transformative project began with the development of a foundational design system. This system was engineered to facilitate easy implementation by developers, focusing on the integration of commonly used components.
My efforts extended to a complete redesign of the student dashboard, account profile, and student inbox, followed by a meticulous revision of the entire student enrollment workflow. The significance of this project was underscored by its scale: the CCC Tech Center's enrollment UI and dashboard are utilized by over 1.9 million students across 116 college campuses in California, making it the largest project I have ever undertaken.
A key aspect of my design strategy was to prioritize usability and accessibility, more so than in any previous project. Additionally, compliance with federal and state regulations, including specific features such as Real.ID, was a critical component of the design process. Given the diverse demographics of community college students, it was imperative to ensure that the product was compatible across a wide range of devices, catering to the varied technological resources of the student body. We also routinely conducted user testing with students to get their feedback on the Next Gen designs.
Beyond the student-facing interfaces, my responsibilities also encompassed enhancing backend/admin features. This aspect was crucial for improving the user interface for administrators and academic professionals who handle hundreds to thousands of student applications. The goal was to streamline their experience, making it more intuitive and efficient, thereby supporting the academic staff in managing the substantial administrative workload. This comprehensive approach to both frontend and backend design not only elevated the user experience for students but also significantly improved the operational efficiency for academic professionals, contributing to an overall enhancement of the educational ecosystem within the California Community College system.
