Un livre de contes, produit dans le cadre d’une résidence d’un artiste Bruxellois en France. L’auteur, Julien Staudt, s’est entretenu pendant 3 ans avec les habitants et a compilé une série d’histoires. J’ai conçu le livre, matérialisant ainsi l’expérience.

It's a fairytale book, produced as part of a Brussels artist residency in France. The author, Julien Staudt, spent 3 years talking to local people and compiling a series of stories. I designed the book, bringing the experience to life.

Il est intéressant de noter que l'endroit est particulier : il s’agit d’une cité, d’habitats à loyers modérés, avec beaucoup d’immigration nord africaine, un quartier bâti en 1970 sous forme d’immeubles et de tours - ce genre d'ensemble est souvent perçu comme des quartiers difficiles.

Écrire des contes dans ce contexte est inusité, et mon parti pris graphique a été de ne pas sortir de la réalité tout en évitant les préjugés et les raccourcis trop simplistes autour de l’intégration et de l’immigration. J’ai aussi souhaité que le livre ait une charge affective, une certaine esthétique et un ancrage dans la réalité, la mémoire et le souvenir. Qu’il soit porté par les habitant et qu’ils puissent s’y reconnaitre.

It's interesting to note that this is a very special place: it's a low-rent housing estate, with a lot of North African immigrants, a district built in 1970 in the form of blocks of flats and tower blocks - this kind of complex is often perceived as a difficult neighbourhood.

Writing tales in this context is unusual, and my graphic approach was to stay close to reality while avoiding prejudices and over-simplistic shortcuts about integration and immigration. I also wanted the book to have an emotional charge, a certain aesthetic quality and to be rooted in reality, memory and remembrance. I wanted it to be carried by the people who live there and for them to be able to recognize themselves in it.
