Problem:
I was tasked with designing a cohesive, distinctively-themed pattern collection that can successfully be applied to real-life products. The collection must feature a Hero, Secondary, and Blender pattern.
Inspiration:
Idea:
My pattern collection mixes the unique block-printing style popular in the South (Victoria Dunn, Spartina 449) with the traditional calico theme of the West.
The result is a tasteful and vibrant pattern collection tailored to my target audience of fashionable jet-setters and classy adventure-seekers (particularly those who are planning a vacation in the southwest!)
Target audience:
Millennial jet setters who love to travel in style
Process:
My original idea for my hero sketch centered around cacti graphics (top row). However, once I explored this idea in my sketches, I found new avenues to incorporate the cacti in a more abstract way (bottom right). I also introduced a few unexpected southwestern-themed graphics, like a roadrunner. The floral motifs resemble actual plants found in desert environments, such as Globemallow flowers and Desert Broom.
Final Patterns: Hero, Secondary, and Blender
Growth:
This project challenged me most in the technicality of developing a pattern. Conceptualization is my strong suit, but ensuring that ideas transfer well from sketch to vector can be an intricate process. By utilizing the stroke options panel and width tool, I found ways to mimic the visual texture and brushstroke style that I originally envisioned.
