Champion Dog Food Design
Business Professionals of America Graphic Design Promo 2024
This year, I had the opportunity to compete in a design competition for Business Professionals of America. I was instructed to create a logo for the (fictional) brand, "Champion Dog Food," as well as design a can of wet dog food, and a 25lb bag of dry kibble. I created this before I had any Adobe certifications, and had at that point only minimally used InDesign and Illustrator. Nevertheless, I'm super proud of the work I submitted with the experience I had.

The three logo variations I created. I ended up only using the first and second one, but I'd like to imagine the third being used for a company t-shirt or other merch!
This is my deconstructed dog food bag. The dog pictured on the left panel was made from Adobe Illustrator's 'text to graphic' AI feature, and was super fun to play with and add my own tweaks to the image after. Luckily for all the text on the right panel, I was able to take information from an actual bag of dog food. It was still however challenging to fit everything I needed onto the design without feeling too crowded, and still looking realistic. With the bar code pictured, I used a bar code generator website which is super handy to know exists now!
Here is the dog food can label I designed next. It's pretty similar to the bag design to show an across-brand cohesiveness, for a customer to hypothetically recognize the brand in stores. At this point in my life, I was actually working at a pet nutrition store and would study the different dog food brands we offered and what designs would draw my eye to them. With that being said, I really enjoy marketing and researching design tactics and best colors used to draw customers to one product more than the next.
As I said above, I got into researching the influences of perception with color in product design while brainstorming for my palette. I chose green which can be associated with sustainability, generosity, abundance, and even wealth. I liked that the green would give my design as earthiness feel to it, and was especially helpful with supporting the "20% of all profits donated to local animal shelters" text I was instructed to include. Not only does adding the supporting color of the blue make the design feel sporty, but blue is said to be the safest color for products, as it signifies trust, peace, and reliability. It was such a great learning moment to be able to see and use color this way!
