DIPLOMA YEAR 3 PROJECT 4 - COLOURS OF NYONYA

Located in the alley behind Venue Hotel along Joo chiat road. The site has a rich cultural, historical, and architectural heritage of Baba Nyonya Peranakan. Currently, many of the shophouses along the Joo chiat road has been converted into residential houses and are still well maintained on the facade. However, despite the well maintained colorful appearance of the shophouses on the front facade, the alleys at back of these shophouses were badly maintained.
a site photo that emphasises the badly maintained and unaesthetic alleys of Joo Chiat road. Issues with the site are the scarcity of lights, uncovered drains, unmaintained landscape and minimal movable space
This project aims to provide a community recreational and educational space for cultural enthusiasts and the residents living nearby.
As the saying goes " A picture speaks a thousand words" , the project aims to educate visitors through an artistic way by installing wall murals about the culture and heritage of Peranakans on walls along the alley.
The proposed design captures many of the significant traits of the Peranakan culture such as incorporating a broad spectrum of pastel colors, patterned Peranakan floor tiles and designed peranakan style street lights and the leaf shaped floor lighting panels to enhance the ambience of the alleys at night.
Street lamps and floor lighting panels were added on to enhance the lighting conditions of the alleys at night, to provide a safer environment for visitors.
The proposed design introduces an infusion of the Peranakan culture and heritage with modern lighting techniqes such as the floor lighting panels. the floor lightings panels are designed with colorful patterned peranakan glass tiles on the top and an infuse LED light panel on the bottom so that vast amounts of light is produced to be able to penetrate the glass tiles to provide a dispersion of colorful lights on the surface.
Bioswales were part ot the proposed design as it merges landscape and the drainage together, maximizing the available movable space of the site. Bioswales also helps to clean the polluted water from rainfall and incoming water from nearby adjacent roads, it also helps to prevent floods.
In order to create a community recreational space where residents could interact with one another, a curve bench was designed. the curve bench allows maximum 3 users at a time. the curve bench was designed with ergonomics to allow visitors to lay back on the bench to take a good view on the wall murals.
The curve bench is made of LED light panels which is encased in a thick layer of tinted glass mold with a layer of peranakan painting on the top.
