Final Major Project | British Music Experience

The year long self-initiated project required a graphic outcome that communicated a complex social, cultural, environmental or professional issue.

In the latter half of the 20th Century Britain began to establish itself as a hub for great musical talent. With the emergence of such talent as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and the Spice Girls, the sound of British music has invaded our hearts. As the birthplace of music genres including punk rock, drum and base, Britpop and dubstep, Britain has defined many eras and influenced musical talent around the world. The aim of the app is to provide an interactive experience that coincides with the ethos of the British Music experience by “reliving the glorious history of British Popular Music.”

The augmented reality app will allow users to explore the history of British music when traveling around the country. The app will use GPS on the users smartphone or tablet to locate various music related locations, revealing information about the location’s relationship to music. For example, if you went to Abbey Road and held your smartphone up to a specific crosswalk, The Beatles would appear to cross the crosswalk and information relating to The Beatles and Abbey Road would be available to view.

Users of the application will be able to engage with other users which will give them a sense of community. Users could leave messages or video of themselves about the location which others could view. As well as the application allowing users to connect to social media, the user will be able to upload their experience to the British Music Experience website where they can create a MyBME account, allowing them to store information about the locations in which they have visited, videos or messages they have uploaded, allowing them to preserve their own British music experience.

Upon signing up to the application/MyBME website, users would be asked about their specific music likes. In-turn the app would inform users when they are near a specific location which would be of interest. Alternatively, the user could request the application to locate music related locations, concerts or exhibitions within a city, or within a specific distance within their geographical location.

The application could be a potential wiki allowing users to add and modify information relating to British music which would keep the app up-to-date. Furthermore, this would help establish the app as a hub for the music community.
