This is a series of 5 postcards designed for the Macleay Museum—a natural history museum on the University of Sydney campus. The museum features an extensive range of Australian fauna and indigenous artifacts. It’s a weird and wonderful space with squids in perspex filled jars; two-headed skeletons; and a metre long crab claw.
I wanted the postcard series to exude a sense of adventure. When I was in the museum, I felt like a little kid discovering a new world. The series features a fictional character, Harold, working his way through the Museum’s exhibits. It’s drawn in a loose, comic style with a bright, popping red. Alongside the images—on the back of the postcards—there is a discongruous narrative taking place, displaying a more humorous and intimate side of Harold, as he learns and grows over the course of his journey.
The Museum is given a logo—a rounded, block ‘M’—to work alongside the series. A tagline for the museum was also developed, “Doctor Lawyer Teacher EXPLORER!” Implying that, regardless of your life and occupation, you’ll lose yourself to the wonders of the space.
