The Equaliser - Publication
The goal of this brief was to curate, edit, design and produce a compendium on a subject. A compendium is a collection of concise but detailed information about a particular subject. The idea here was to take thematically linked texts and compile them together to create a publication. The recommendation for the brief was to use a topic that you were passionate about. This led me to create a football oriented publication outcome as I have a great interest in all things football related. I chose to focus my attentions on the money side of football and how it is affecting the beautiful game. Initially my research led me to match day programs from football games, but they lacked the kind of opinion-based writing I was looking for. It was only through this research that I towards the idea of a fanzine. I enjoyed the classic 80's style of fanzines that I had collected through the research phase. Modern versions were very corporate and had moved away from the style that drew my attention. Rather than make a parody or directly copy the classic styles, I used the items I had collected as influences to produce my own version of a fanzine. Following an 80's style format with a more modern finish. I collected variations illustrations from these classic fanzines to use in my version. The format also moved away from the traditional A5 versions in favour of a custom size, in order to distance myself further from a direct copy, putting my edition between A5 and A4. This allowed me to work more with my design rather than remaking the originals
