I've been back for a couple of months now and began planning my next trip on the plane.
This fall I'll be going to South Africa and Namibia in search of the Welwitschia, a homely plant that gorws only in the Namib Desert.

Spent the last week in Pelanesburg Park. Beautiful place, close to Johannesburg. It sits in the ring of a very ancient volcano.
These elephants came to drink right by one of the several hides there.

Scarab    Dung beatles lay their eggs in large balls of rhino or elephant dung. Some bury the balls in underground tunnels. There are over 4000 kinds of scarab.

Young water monitor lizard. They get to be over six feet long, this on is only half that.

Warthogs are always amusing, they never fail to add a comic take on the bush.

Red Bishop    As opposed to red-winged blackbirds in the States, Africa has black-winged redbirds.
11-25-2013
Thick-billed Weaver     Very industrious little birds. They weave a nest on a reed to raise their young. Red Bishops are usually their neighbors.

The streets of Zanzibar are narrow hot and exotic and colorful. You just want to keep to the side of the street though, so you don't get run over by a moped or a bycicle.

Arrived in Zanzibar this morning. The airport is archaic. The Hotel reminds me of Rangoon in '36...or was it '35?
Lots of kids jumping in the ocean as the sun sets. They look like they're having a great time.

Yesterday I attended a snake handeling class at Heia Safari Park outside of Johannesburg. Johan is one of the premier snake authorities in SA and around the world. It was a very good experience. You never stop learning.
Male bomslang in Johan's fingers
This Puff Adder was one of the unwilling participants at the snake course. He also had cobras and bomslangs.
On my last day in Kruger I saw a bus full of tourists looking out the windows at something. There didn't appear to be anything there. As I approached I could tell they were looking down at the road, but at first I didn't see anything. When the bus left and I could get closer I could see they had been watching this large land snail.
Not exactly one of the big five. These leopard tortoises seem to be everywhere. People driving in Kruger are apparently very careful at avoiding them. My whole time there I never saw one road kill.

Just got back from two weeks in the bush with no internet access. The quiet and isolation were luxureous. Only the distant snorts of hippos, a myriad of bird sounds and the occasional rattle of a passing Land Rover. This lion was a loner. He had just taken down an eland more than twice his size, and after gorging himself, looked in need of an Alka Seltzer.

Tomorrow morning we're leaving for Makalali Preserve next to Kruger National Park. There is supposed to be an amazing array of wildlife including the Big Five. It has been raining off and on ever since we got to Johannesberg and unseasonably cool. After a few days in Makalali I'll be going to Kruger for a week by myself.

I'll be going back to South Africa in Oct. 2013. I will be in the bush for as much of three months as I can possibly stand.
For me, this is the real world. I will persue it as long as it exists.
Follow my blog on artvidervol.com. I'll be updating it aboutt every other day while I'm gone.

The Raffia Palm Forest on the East Coast of South Africa. Extremely humid, dripping and soggy.
Loud, giant cicadas live here. The sound is metallic and deafening. It is also the home of the Gabon Viper. This snake has the longest fangs measuring in at 2". Sadly the palm forest is disappearing  rapidly giving way to development.
