History of St Barnabas Church

St Barnabas is a Church located in Bethnal Green, it was built in the late 19th century. The Church is near Bethnal Green, Bow and Old Ford. It is an Anglican Church in the Diocese of London. The building was built in 1865 as a Baptist Chapel, designed by William Wigginton but was consecrated for the Church of England in 1870. The Church was badly damaged by bombings during the Second World War, therefore the Church had to be rebuilt. The remodelling was carried out by J Anthony Lewis of architects Michael Tapper & Lewis, who commissioned the sculptor Don Potter to create "The Four Evangelists" on the outside of the building. The Vicar of St Barnabas Church is Father Brian Ralph.
