This artwork is a 50cm x 70cm drawing on dark yellow paper, entirely made with red Bic pen.

It is a representation of Boswellia sacra, the primary tree from which frankincense, a resinous dried sap, is harvested. Frankincense (the resin tears visible on one trunk in the drawing) has been used throughout centuries for spiritual and health reasons, from Egypt to China. Out of it are made incenses, perfumes and essential oils.
The piece is currently owned by the Shih Mendez family, to whom it  was dedicated because of their particular appreciation for frankincense.

The sun is a synthetic representation of Boswellia sacra’s flower, with its ten stamens (inside the circle) and five petals (outside the circle). Influenced by my recent journey throughout Mexico, I also onstructed it as a sort of nierika (“device for seeing” in Huichol language), a tool for meditation, which one can use by staring at its empty center, possibly reducing the blinking and remaining conscious of the bodily sensations of the spine.
