[GAME AND NARRATIVE DESIGN] Katharsis (TCC, 2018)

Katharsis - Conclusion Work for my Game Design Degree - PUC-SP (2018)
Katharsis is still in its pre-alpha phase and everything so far was built in a year by a group of three people: Me, Gabriel Barbosa and Luciano del Bianco.

Main roles in the project:
- Narrative Design;
- Character Conception;
- Creation Direction;
- System Design;
- UI/UX Direction;
- Quality Assurance;
- User Testing Management;
- Product Management.

Katharsis is a deep experience that focus on the absence of violence and influence of soundtrack on the user experience.

We developed unique characters for our players to connect with, trying to put some important mental illness into discussion. As a team, we wanted people to experience how hard it was to be neurodivergent and have people who needed help with it to identify with the stories and feel safe and cared for, in the game's community.

We had professional psychological consultants and months of research to deal with such delicate subjects.

As you can see (even though it's not fully translated, and forgive me for that!), Katharsis also had a major influence from the Disney movie Inside Out, regarding anthropomorphizing human emotions.

There was also a huge concern of mine to make the game's narrative flow along with the gameplay as one (since this is one of my major fields of study, the narrative-gameplay connection). Below, you will see how I managed to link our game's script according to the levels and story progression, in order to refine this flow between the two:
We wish to continue the game and put all we planned to proof, since the highlights are all on late levels and it's the narrative's "cherry-on-top".

Have a (very quick) sneak-peek at a little part of the game's script for the first level, written and translated by me:
