FICTIONAL PLANET FLAG” – © 2016
Fictional
Acrylic painting; actual size  – 16” x 25.6”.  Design for a flag of a Minshara-class planet with six major continents, situated in a multiple star system.  The areas of the teal blue corners and the green central stripe correspond approximately to the ocean/land ratio on its surface.

"PROPOSED DESIGN OF A FLAG FOR THE CITY OF EAST LANSING” – 2016

Acrylic painting; actual size  – 9” x 13”.  Design of a flag of the City of East Lansing, Michigan.

OCTAGONAL CENTER TABLE – © 2013

The finished view of an eight-sided English center table which I acquired in 2003. Dimensions of the top are 36” x 36” (91 x 91 cm). The gameboard in the middle is faux-finished to simulate pieces malachite and black granite. Ornamentation on the pedistal base expands on the colors and faux textures of the top. Everything here except the underlying reddish wood grain is done with acrylic paint.

“U.S. 'TRICENTENNIAL' FLAG CONCEPT” – © 2013

Acrylic painting; actual size 30.5” x 16”.   My own recent variation on a familiar theme.  The lack of symmetry in the U.S. flag has always bothered me for some reason.  This is my attempt at a design that does have symmetry, adds curves, and has a somewhat less “cluttered” look.  I don't expect everyone to like it, of course.

“SOL SYSTEM FLAG” – © 2007

CAD rendering; rendering size – 16” x 25.6”. An AutoCAD rendering of my design for a flag representing the Solar system. The principle inspiration for this design was taken from the United Nations flag; and the main colors (green and dark blue) were suggested by the modern flag of Brazil. The silver-gray circles denote the planetary orbits, with widths indicating the relative masses. The two dotted rings denote the Asteroid Belt (inner), and the Kuiper Belt (outer). This is the fourth version of the design.

"W J Z K" – © 1994

Acrylic airbrush painting; actual size -- 16" x 24".  A radio station logo design done as a portfolio piece.   (Actually, there is no station with the call letters "WJZK" in Kalamazoo, Michigan; but a web-search does show one near Columbus, Ohio --- and it is a jazz station.  Haven't seen their logo.)

“THE MIDNIGHT ESPRESSO CAFÉ” – © 1998

AutoCAD Rendering.  The Midnight Espresso Café is an adaptive reuse design project utilizing an existing building shell.  The overall dimensions of the internal space are 20 feet wide and 65 feet in length.  The existing ceiling height is twelve feet.

The completed project is a neighborhood coffee and snack shop.  The renovated space includes a main seating area, two ADA accessible restrooms, a service and display counter, and a kitchen-storage area in the rear.  The new ceiling is multi-tiered and includes indirect cove lighting.  There are two access points, the main street entrance, and a delivery door in the rear of the structure.

Décor in the Café is executed in the Art Deco style.  The color scheme includes beiges, light browns, and grayed purple, with accents in brass and wood tones.  Lighting in the main area also includes adjustable ceiling pin-lights and wall sconces.  The kitchen-storage area has recessed, color balanced, fluorescent light arrays in the ceiling.

The seating area contains individuals tables and chairs and two C-shaped booths with seating in the center and on the outside. Maximum seating capacity is 42 people.  The two restrooms are barrier-free, and lit with a combination of sconces and wall-washing pin-lights.  The color schemes in each are the same, but the areas of dominant and secondary colors are reversed.  (This design project was done for a course in Non-Residential Interiors.)

ARTS & CRAFTS STYLE AREA RUG – © 1998

Colored pencil; rendering size – 6” x 9.25”. A hand-colored rendering of an area rug designed in the Arts & Crafts style, and drawing inspiration from Frank Lloyd Wright window patterns. One of two designs developed for a class titled Materials for Interiors.

“ORBITS” - ART DECO STYLE AREA RUG – © 1998

Colored pencil; rendering size 8.25” x 12.75”.  This Art Deco-inspired design could be used to define a focal grouping in a residential or hospitality setting, or simply as a wall hanging.  The rug is constructed of a tip-sheared acrylic/nylon fiber blend that provided excellent color retention, good durability, and high visual appeal.  Its overall dimensions are 108" x 72".  The layout and colors of the concentric rings are suggested by the planets of the Solar system (before Pluto was reassigned to dwarf planet status). Although the size of the central violet region is arbitrary, the size of the central sunburst and the width of the rings were determined in logarithmic proportion to the relative masses of the sun and planets.
