The name of Mpu Bharada appears in the Serat Calon Arang as a figure who defeated Airlangga's enemy, namely Calon Arang, a powerful widow from the village of Girah. It is also told, Airlangga intends to abdicate to the throne. He then studied with Mpu Bharada. The two sons are competing for the throne.
