The US Open is one of the three major golf tournaments held in America. The first edition of the tournament was held in 1895 in Newport, Rhode Island. It was a 36-hole event, and it was played over a nine-hole course of the Newport Golf and Country Club. The first winner was Horace Rawlins, a professional player from England.

The first victory for the American players came in 1911 when John McDermot won the championship. In 1913, Francis Ouimet, an amateur at that time, defeated Ted Ray and Harry Vardon in a playoff to claim his first title.

In the next 90 editions of the US Open, American golfers won 87 trophies, leaving only three to foreign players. In 1930, Bobby Jones won his fourth US Open title and became the only player to win all four major titles in a single year.

Arnold Palmer took his first title in 1960. He was seven strokes behind in the final round. In 2000, Tiger Woods set the championship record with a victory by 15 strokes.
