A contour illustration study of St. Lawrence Market, Toronto.
Materials:
Ink pen– Staedtler pigment liner, 0.1 mm.
11 x 14 image area on 14 x 17 bond pad paper.
Procreate– iPad Pro
Creative Process:
While omitting the highlights and shadows, the focus of this illustration was on the contour of the lines, shapes, and characters of the business store front.
Workflow:
This illustration was done freehandedly from an indoor study at St. Lawrence Market. The draft study took about 2 hours, final inking consumed about 6 hours.
To further elevate the illustration, I've decided to import the image into procreate for a colour render. It was my first time using procreate. Out of the many brushes, I picked a painting brush called "round brush" because of its simplicity. I really like the semi opacity effect that I could achieve with this brush.
I also wanted to play with the colour saturation. I think that the vibrancy of the colours give off a different style to the illustration. I like how the colours work out well for the fruits.
Conclusion:
It gives me a great sense of accompliment to see that the mindful details of the illustration really pay off. This is my first ever on-site study at a busy public market. At times, it was difficult to focus on my sketch work. However, I figured out a pattern to speed sketch and take intermitted breaks between times where the market was crowded. In my next illustration study, I wish to improve on my colouring skills on procreate and work on the overall presentation of the illustration.
