Book Design - 'Diary of an Insane Woman'

To commemorate the hundred-year-anniversary of Hungarian writer Géza Csáth’s death I designed and hand-bound one of his works called ‘Diary of an Insane Woman’. Scrutinizing the text I chose parts that I thought were significant and that made a strong impression on me, and I made illustrations that amplifies the text. I used a hand printing technique in which I tore up and cut out different kinds of rustic paper which I glued together and made a print of it using lino-cut paint. With the torn-up paper illustrations I wanted to emphasize the instability of the crazy woman’s character. I wanted to try something I haven’t done before so I made a Leporello binding, in other words an accordion binding.
I especially enjoyed pasting the pages and hard cover of the book together. I think this binding technique changes the way we usually look at a book. This way you can open up all the pages and look at it as a whole.
