Abstract
Many of the challenges seem to be related to getting customers to improve the efficiency of their electric motors to both save them energy, the cost associated with the reduced energy consumption and positive environmental impact. We thought about this and considered if ABB could contemplate an alternative business model to facilitate this. Two key changes to the business model focused on the first are for ABB to lease the most efficient electric motors to their business clients instead of selling them. This enables ABB to ensure that the most effective electric motors are in use. This has many repercussions, some not all of them are seen and to some extent discussed in this document but this will need to be explored further. The second key change is increasing the value they provide to ABB’s customers by collecting and providing a way of representing data so that their customers and ABB can benefit. The customers benefit as they can have access to analysis of their data both for improving the operations of their motors and to post their positive environmental impact on their website, social media and such to show the tangible difference they are making in collaboration with ABB. This could attract additional customers to their products and make them more attractive to workforce talent. It will benefit ABB by enabling them to collect data from the motors installed at their clients so that they can design and develop better modifications or motors based on data.
