Project 1: Playing with FIRE movie poster

For my movie poster, I went with the title Playing with FIRE. The principle actor I chose was Will Smith, with the release date being Summer 2015. The ideas I was going with for this poster came from the movie Olympus Has Fallen with Gerard Butler, where he saves the day when the White House is under attack. This is a similar premise of that, where a man in an office building nearby the White House can visibly see that the White House is under attack. While everybody runs and flees for safety, one man (Will Smith), a former marine, will rise to the occasion. The people who attacked the White House with ammunition, do not realize that they are Playing with FIRE because Will Smith makes them pay for what they did.

I chose the picture of the White House being blown up because it is an epic picture and has great detail and it went along with my original ideas of what I wanted to create. I chose a photo of a man looking out of large windows because it fit the requirement of a background image that can be looked through and it enhanced the attention-grabbing aspect of the poster. I chose the image of the sky with the clouds that looked like they were on fire as well because it added to the elements of the photo of the White House already and blended in well to an extent. I chose the strap line of "One Nation Under God" because it relates to the White House and the government. Also, with the United States being united as one and how people take pride in this great nation we live in, regardless of the things that take place. It also fits with principle actor of the movie being a former Marine, whose primary job is to protect our nation.

I used various different tools to enhance this photo. For starters, I placed the various photos into the 9' by 12' JPEG, using the place embedded tool. Next, I put them in order so they could blend together. The background photo is the White House being blown up image. Then, I added the man looking out the big glass windows image. In order to get these images to blend, I used the rectangular marquee tool to crop out various sections of the window where the view had been a man looking out over a city. So I had to take out the areas where the city was shown with that tool. Next, I used the vector mask tool to invert the picture so the White House image would be coming through the window. In order to get the areas around the man's body and head to diminish, I used the brush tool and carefully worked my way around him to the best of my ability and further blend the White House image into the poster. Finally, I had to work in a title, strap line, release date, principle actor, MPAA rating, and studio logo. I used logotypes101.com to get the MPAA rating, as well as the studio logo. Those were not too difficult to enter into the image. I set the bleeding lines, therefore they are aligned with each other and not touching the corners. For the other additions, I used the Text box [T] app on the sidebar in Photoshop. It was cool to play around with the effects of the Text Box and work on further enhancing the poster. I used a few different layer styles and angles of text to catch an audiences' attention. I warped the movie title using the Squeeze style and I thought it turned out well.

Overall, I really enjoyed working on this assignment and had fun tinkering with various images and applications on Photoshop. There is definitely a lot of room for improvement, but I am pleased with the progress I made on this poster. I like my final product for the movie poster and I hope you guys do too.
