EXHIBITION OVERVIEW
Brand X and The Rizzeria present PLACES TO FIND BEAUTY, a series of collage and mixed media works by Samantha Hornitzky and Emily Boulton.
Drawing on the rich history of collage in the Pop Art, Surrealist and Dada movements, the artists explore the beauty in orgasm, heartbreak, healing, outsiders, fear, nature and spirituality. The exhibition features eighteen original artworks created for their sold out zine (short-run publication) showcased at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney.
PLACES TO FIND BEAUTY came from a poem/gratitude list in one of Sam’s journals. The artists selected the most resonant verses, then trawled through hundreds of images to find the subjects in their works. Sources ranged from the low to high-brow – Italian Vogue, super market junk mail, design and interior magazines, queer street press, National Geographic, vintage books, Mexican poster art, newspapers, youth advertising and travel brochures.
The audience is inspired to recall a time or place that they experienced beauty. By day, Emily and Sam work as commercial designers, in the branding and banking industries respectively. PLACES TO FIND BEAUTY was an opportunity for them to work on something they'd wanted to do since they were in uni.
