I designed these cocktail tables back in 2007, as a freelance project for a furniture design and manufacturing company called Northpole. Northpole distributes to Home Depot, Wal-Mart and Lowes – mostly outdoor patio and camping furniture.
This project was one of my favorites with Northpole, a company that basically put me through my last two years of college. I came up with the idea of a patio table with an ice bucket in the center and Allen, my Northpole product manager, loved the idea. I sketched about 100 designs, modeled dozens with chipboard and wire, and put a few into CAD (I was using Alias at the time)
Funny, I have no idea if any of these tables were actually manufactured. The Wireframe design was thought through to production, packaging and even end-user assembly. Even the bucket was modeled. Even the drain plug of the bucket was modeled! If I find the pictures of the bucket, I will add to this post. And maybe I will follow-up with Allen and see if anything ever got produced.
Looking back on these old designs, I actually see a UX design flaw with the design of the Wireframe Table…do you see it?
