Circle of Life - the process behind creating the image.

Circle of Life

Life takes you through a rough ride, surprising you with another jolt and suddenly your in another direction and you don't recognise the person you have become. You process, you learn, you evolve.

This is my self portrait for an artist collaboration where the concept is a chain of art that is inspired by a piece another artist has done. This art piece was a response to Karis Lambert's painting Transfiguration which is shown below (the image is a screenshot from her Instagram feed). She based it on a photo by Hannah E Ward and was inspired by glitch art of Jesse Bellon. Jesse Bellon, another artist built on Hannah's photograph by turning it into glitch art which inspired Karis who then inspired my photo.

The concept I came up with was to somehow photo-manipulate in Photoshop 2 or 3 of images of myself into a chain using my lips and eyes to blur into the next clone.

Before the photoshoot, I sketched a very rough drawing onto paper so I could figure out quickly the pattern of where I would link the photos together and which way I should be facing in each. I was conscious to make sure I had plenty of images to choose from, some, where my eyes were closed, some, where my head was turned profile and some straight on.
My photoshoot setup: A wall next to a window. I knew I only needed to use a photo of myself from the waist up so it didn't matter there was a radiator in the way. I set up my camera on my tripod, figured out my camera settings and connected my remote control so I didn't have to keep going back to the camera every time to press the self-timer button. I highly recommend investing in a good camera remote if you are doing photography self portraits.

Before photo - I arranged the photos in Photoshop. I put each image on its own layer and selected round it with the mask tool ready to manipulate together. I played around with different blur effects to get the desired result and adjusted the colour and contrast using the curves tool as well as doing some skin retouching. I also added a 3rd photo of a plain part of the wall to help the photo blend into one square photo.
